Follow the steps below to begin using Hamline University's technology resources for learning.

Knowing Your Piperline PIN
Piperline is the system that provides you access to your Hamline records.  Newly-admitted students receive their Piperline PIN and information on how to use Piperline. If you have not gotten your PIN or you do not remember it, contact the Student Administrative Services Office by phone at 800-888-2182 or 651-523-3000 or by visiting East Hall building, Room 113E.

Obtaining Your Hamline Identification Card
Hamline student identification cards (ID card) are required for all students. ID cards may be obtained at the Safety and Security Office. The ID card includes your Hamline ID Number and Library Code.

Using the Piperline System
Piperline is the system that provides students access to their records. To access Piperline, you need to know your Hamline ID number (or your Social Security number) and Piperline PIN. You can contact the Office of Student Administrative Service if you need help on how to use Piperline.

Learning about Hamline University’s Computer Requirements
Hamline minimum computer requirements are intended to ensure that the equipment you bring to campus meets any software requirements placed on it for the current academic year. Computer equipment recommendations represent what we consider to be the ideal system configuration for a computer that is expected to support you through your academic program. For the most recent computer requirement please go to www.hamline.edu/knowledgebase and choose "The Basics."

Using Your  Hamline Email Account

Hamline University provides Google Email accounts for admitted licensure and degree seeking students (admitted), powered by the full Google Apps Education Suite. Students Google Email account are in the format of username@hamline.edu, where  username is a combination of the first letter of your first name, your entire last name and a number. If you do not know your email address, please login into your Piperline, choose "Personal information" and "Update Email Address(es)."

Using the Blackboard Course Management System
Blackboard is the Hamline University learning (course management) system, which allows for learning to extend to the online environment. You may use Blackboard in the courses you take at Hamline University.

You can access Blackboard using a Web browser at http://hamline.blackboard.com. (You may also access Blackboard from the Logins page at http://wwww.hamline.edu/logins.) If you do not remember your password, click on the "Forgot your password?" link to identify yourself. An email will be sent to your Hamline email with instructions to change your password.

Using the NetStorage System
NetStorage is a web-based file storage system available to students. You have a 30 MB private space assigned in the NetStorage server.

Accessing Library Databases
Bush Library offers students free access to diverse databases. Access to library databases is available through the Bush Library web site. Accessing library databases from off-campus requires you enter you Hamline ID# or Library code.

Learning about the Campus Wireless Network
All Hamline University buildings that directly affect students, teaching, and learning are served by secure wireless connectivity. To access the campus wireless network you need to authenticate using your Hamline User Account (Novell) username and password.

Learning about Computer Labs on Campus
Over 150 microcomputers are housed in public computer labs across the campus. The main computer lab is located in the lower level of Bush Library. There is also a 24-Hour Computer Lab in the Sorin Residence Hall, open 24-hour and available to all Hamline students.

Learning about Printing/Copying Equipment on Campus
Hamline University uses a billing code based printing/copying solution for all students. All of Hamline University’s computer labs and public printer/copiers are under this billing code system. You need to know your Printing/Billing Code in order to use printing/copying equipment on campus. Your Printing/Copying Billing Code is encoded on the magnetic stripe on the back of your Hamline ID card, and it is also available in Piperline.

Using the LiveText System
LiveText is a software platform designed to support and coordinate the learning outcomes assessment work defined by our academic and student affairs programs.

The tools for facilitating and coordinating learning and assessment that LiveText provides go beyond but do not replace what Blackboard provides as our learning management system. Thus a course might have some content in Blackboard, but also have some assignments that are submitted and assessed in LiveText.

Using the SofTest System
SofTest is a test assessment program utilized by the Hamline Law School. Developed and licensed by ExamSoft, it enables exam takers to download exams to their own laptop computers, block access to files, programs and the Internet during an exam, and complete exams securely and remotely.

SofTest is a product of ExamSoft (www.examsoft.com).

Knowing Where to Find Help
Technology-related support for students is available at the ITS Help Desk located in the basement of the Bush Library (651-523-2220).

The Knowledge Base (www.hamline.edu/knowledgebase) is the best place to find help online anytime anywhere about Hamline University's technology tools for learning.
